Star Wars Cake Ideas: Yoda Cake

Everybody set an alarm, because The Force is Awakening super soon!  With Episode VII’s opening in theaters right around the corner, Star Wars is as popular as ever.  If the Force is extra strong with your little one, they’ll surely be begging for a Star Wars party, and it’s up to you to find the perfect cake. Well, look no further!

This Yoda cake is straight out of the Swamps of Dagobah. Test your Jedi training and add special effects like slime, leaves and grass around the sides of the cake.

This is just a single layer cake, but as Yoda says, “Size matters not.” Judge this cake by its size do you?

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 – 8” Single Layer Cake
  • 2 Cups White Icing
  • 1 Cup Grass Green Icing
  • 1 Cup Olive Green Icing
  • Star Wars Yoda PhotoCake® Edible Cake Image
  • 3 Cups Piping Gel
  • Premium Gel Color in Neon Green, Olive Green, Grass Green and Brown
  • Piping Tip #3
  • Piping Tip #4
  • Piping Tip #5
  • Leaf Decorating Tip #69
  • Small Grass Decorating Tip #133
  • 1 7/8” Cake Icer Decorating Tip #789
  • 18” Pastry Bags
  • Coupler
  • Cake Decorator’s Icing Scraper
  • 10” Round Cake Board, White

Step 1

Place an 8” round single layer cake on an 8” white cake board and base. Ice with white icing.

Step 2

Apply a thin layer of chocolate or brown icing with an open coupler. Pipe in a zig zag pattern around the sides of the cake.

Step 3

Using a Cake Decorator’s Plastic Icing Scraper, smooth the icing on the sides of the cake, just as you would to base ice the cake. Continue scraping the icing and blend around the entire cake to look like tree bark.

Step 4

Remove the Star Wars Yoda PhotoCake® Edible Cake Image from the backing.

Tip: Use the edge of your counter or table as an easy way to remove the image. If you are having difficulty, put your image in the freezer for a few minutes.

Apply image to the top of the cake. If icing has begun to dry, mist with a little water before adding the image.

Color clear piping with one cup of each: Neon Green, Brown and Olive Green.

Tip: Piping gel takes color easily, so begin with 3-4 drops of gel color and add 1 drop at a time until desired color is achieved.

 Step 7

Using Piping Tip #5, pipe “slime” around the top of the cake, letting it drip slightly over the sides. Begin with Neon Green slime and cover the edge of the PhotoCake Edible Cake Image.

Using Piping Tip #5, pipe brown and olive green “slime” around the top of the cake, layering over the neon green slime.

Step 9

Using olive green icing, pipe plants around the side of the cake. Make vines with Piping Tip #4.

Step 10

Continue piping olive green plants. Add ferns with Piping Tip #3.

Add olive green leaves with Leaf Tip #69.

To make double-color grass, stripe grass green icing and olive green icing in a single 18” Pastry Bag. Add grass green icing to one side of the bag, and olive green icing on the other side.

Step 13

Use Grass Tip #133 to add grass around the base of the cake.

Tip: Pipe at different angles to the grass a natural organic look.
