Fun for Gamers

Mushroom Kingdom Obstacle Course

Estimated time: 30 minutes

  • stopwatch (or use the second hand on a wristwatch)
  • scorepad (paper and pen)
  • obstacle course items (boxes, ladder, inner tube, etc.)
  • cardboard cutout or Princess Peach standup
  • bean bags (or something else for "mushrooms")

In this game, kids race through Mushroom Kingdom to see who can rescue Princess Peach the fastest. Divide kids into 2 teams: Team Mario and Team Luigi. Create an obstacle course where kids take turns jumping over or crawling through cardboard boxes, running around hula hoops, stepping through rungs of a ladder, etc. At the end of the course, each player must pick up Princess Peach to stop the clock. For bonus points, kids can pick up mushrooms (bean bags) along the way. Each mushroom collected equals one second deducted from that child's time. After everyone's had a turn, add times together for each team. The team with the fastest time total wins. Give favor prizes to everyone!

Gold Coin Search

Estimated time: 30 minutes

Gold coins are the primary currency in Mushroom Kingdom. Before the party, hide gold coins in your party area or outside (if weather permits). To play, tell kids that gold coins are hidden throughout the kingdom and each citizen must find 5 coins in order to buy the birthday cake (or cupcakes) from the town baker. Give each child a small bag to hold coins. Once all the coins have been found and brought to the baker (a.k.a. Mom or Dad), dessert can be served! If necessary, kids can help each other locate the hard-to-find coins.

Pin the Moustache on Mario

Estimated time: 25 minutes

  • posterboard, poster of Mario, or Mario standup
  • colored pens
  • construction paper
  • tape
  • blindfold

This is a fun twist on the classic party game of "Pin the Tail on the Donkey." Draw a picture of Mario on posterboard (or buy a Mario poster or Mario standup). Cut moustache shapes from construction paper. Write a child's name on the front of each, and put double-sided tape on the back. Blindfold each child when it's his/her turn, and see who "pins" their moustache closest to the correct spot on Mario's face. It's so much fun, kids will want to play more than once!

Gamers' Pizzas

Estimated Total Time: 25 minutes

  • one English muffin per child
  • pizza sauce
  • various toppings (shredded cheese, olives, pepperoni, mushrooms, etc.)

Split muffins in half and top with pizza sauce and shredded cheese. Place in front of each child so he/she can decorate the pizzas with their choice of toppings. Bake on a cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 5-10 minutes, or until cheese melts. Helpful hint: place a colored toothpick in each pizza before baking to keep track of whose pizza is whose; remove before serving.

Mushroom Cupcakes

Estimated Total Time: 25 minutes

  • cupcake mix
  • frosting (red)
  • white chocolate (chips or bark)
  • white cupcake wrappers
  • brown felt tip pen
  • faux grass (Easter basket grass)

Before the party, draw two oblong eyes on the outside of the cupcake wrappers. Bake cupcakes in wrappers; let cool. Melt white chocolate and drop small amounts onto a cookie sheet to form disk shapes; let harden. Frost cupcakes and place several white disks on top to look like the mushrooms in the video game. Serve on a platter with faux grass.

Mario Party Punch

Estimated Total Time: 25 minutes

  • 2 3-oz. packages peach flavored gelatin
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup lemon juice
  • 46-oz. can pineapple juice
  • 1½ quarts ginger ale

Before the party, dissolve gelatin in 2 cups of boiling water. In a separate pan, combine sugar and 2 cups of cold water; bring to a boil and let boil until the sugar is dissolved. Add to gelatin mixture and set aside to cool. When cooled, add lemon and pineapple juice. Mix well. Pour into a plastic container with tight-fitting lid. Freeze. When ready to serve, place container under hot water for a few minutes. Place frozen punch in punch bowl and add ginger ale. Stir to mix. (Mixture will be slightly slushy.)
