Farmers for a Day
As your guests arrive, transform all the kids into little farmers! Tie bandanas around their necks, and give them John Deere hats to wear. Hand them their "livestock", too (boxes of animal cookies)!
Take the kids on a tractor-spotting adventure. Be sure to look for potential locations ahead of time. You can even include a visit to a farm or petting zoo. Find out if the kids can go on a pony ride, learn how to milk a cow, feed chickens, gather eggs, etc.
- plastic eggs that open (1 per child)
- farm animal stickers
- a large container filled with straw or raffia
Gather your little chicks for a special egg hunt. Before kids arrive, place a sticker or drawing of a different farm animal inside each egg. Hide the eggs in the straw-filled container, and invite kids to find an egg, open it, and see what their surprise animal is. When everyone has opened an egg, form a circle and make sure kids know their animals. Then, sing "Old MacDonald Had a Farm," and invite kids to take turns acting and sounding like their surprise animals.
- bowls of chocolate pudding (1 per child)
- hair ties for longer hair
Kids love playing this messy game. Line up the bowls of muddy-looking pudding along the ground (whether indoors or outdoors, place a tablecover under the bowls for easier cleanup). Tie back hair that might get in the way. Then ask all the kids to place hands on the ground, beside their bowls, and keep them there throughout the game. When you shout, "Suey!" kids dive into their pudding bowls, and eat with no hands! If you wish, give prizes to the players with the cleanest bowls and the messiest faces. You'll get hilarious pictures, too!
Fantastic Farmer's Cake
Estimated Total Time: 45 minutes
- large sheet cake (homemade or from a bakery)
- green and golden-yellow frosting
- cocoa powder
- colorful candies (except for very young children)
This cake is perfect for birthday kids to help decorate. Frost the cake golden-yellow, with green frosting around the outside. Then add our John Deere molded candle in the middle
Brown Cow Milk Shakes
Estimated Total Time: 15 minutes
- 6 cups milk
- 6 tbsp. cocoa mix
- 3 ripe bananas (sliced)
- 4 scoops of vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt
A yummy birthday beverage! Divide first row of ingredients in half. Blend. Then add 2 scoops of ice cream, and whirl away some more. Next do the second batch. Serve in our exclusive John Deere tumblers or John Deere tire cups.
Estimated Total Time: 25 minutes
- 1 cup natural nut butter (check with parents first about nut allergies)
- 2 cans (5-oz.) chow mein noodles
- 1 cup cornflakes
- 1 bag (12-oz.) butterscotch chips
- wooden spoon
- large bowl
- waxed paper
Hay! Kids will plow right through these yummy snacks. Using a wooden spoon, stir the 4 ingredients together in bowl. Melt chips in saucepan on low heat, and then mix into the bowl with the other ingredients. Spoon out small mounds (haystacks) onto waxed paper. Then cool, and serve.
Farmer John's Veggie Tray
Estimated Total Time: 20 minutes
- 1 cup baby carrots
- 1 cup baby corn
- 1 cup broccoli, chopped
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes
- 1 cup cucumbers, sliced thin
- 1 cup spinach
- fresh dill
- veggie dip (homemade or packaged)
- sunflower seeds
Bring the farm to your party table! First, add a layer of veggie dip to your tray. Top with a layer of spinach and a layer of cucumbers. Next, sprinkle a heavy layer of sunflower seeds (this will make your appetizer look like a "field"). Add the remaining veggies in rows over the top and finish with the dill. Refrigerate for 2 hours and serve.
